Coverages Your Survivors Can Continue

Medical and Dental

Your survivors can continue coverage under COBRA for up to 36 months or until they become eligible for Medicare. (If your spouse is entitled to Medicare at your death, coverage will continue for 36 months).

Health Care Reimbursement Account
  • Your spouse can continue contributions on an after-tax basis through COBRA until the end of the year of your death. Your spouse will receive a letter from the Plan Administrator with instructions on how to continue participation.
  • Your spouse must submit claims by June 30 of the following year for expenses incurred while he or she was contributing.

Note: Costs incurred by a same-sex domestic partner/civil union are not eligible for reimbursement from the Health Care or the Dependent Day Care Reimbursement Account.

Postretirement Supplemental Health Benefits Plan

If you die while actively employed and you are married, have an eligible same-sex domestic partner/civil union, or have eligible dependents, your surviving spouse, domestic partner, or dependents can either receive your account balance as a lump sum or use it to pay medical premiums or eligible health care expenses, as outlined by the plan. When you enroll, you make the election that determines how your spouse, domestic partner/civil union or dependents will access your account balance.

If you have no eligible dependents at the time of your death, your account balance is paid to your estate.

Group Legal Plan

Your surviving spouse and dependents can continue coverage by contacting the carrier.

Long Term Care

Your surviving spouse, eligible same-sex domestic partner/civil union, and dependents can continue coverage by contacting the carrier.

Group Universal Life/Group Variable Universal Life Insurance (GUL/GVUL)

Your surviving spouse and dependents can continue coverage by contacting the carrier.

Property and Casualty Insurance

Your surviving spouse, eligible same-sex domestic partner/civil union, and dependents can continue coverage by contacting the carrier.

Coverages That Will Stop

Dependent Day Care Reimbursement Account

The account terminates on the date of your death and cannot be continued.

Your surviving spouse can submit claims by June 30 of the following year for expenses incurred while you were contributing.

Note: Costs incurred by a same-sex domestic partner/civil union are not eligible for reimbursement from the Health Care or the Dependent Day Care Reimbursement Account.

Long Term Disability Coverage ends on the date of your death and cannot be continued.

Programs That Will Pay Benefits

Group Universal Life/Group Variable Universal Life Insurance

Benefits are paid to your designated beneficiary(ies).

Group Term Life Insurance

Benefits are paid to your designated beneficiary(ies).

Thrift Plan

Your designated beneficiary(ies) must choose what to do with your account balance:

  • Roll it over into an Individual Retirement Account (IRA)
  • Roll it over into another qualified plan
  • Elect to receive a lump-sum distribution

If your account balance is less than $1,000 when you die, your beneficiary(ies) will receive an automatic lump-sum distribution of your account balance.

Cash Balance Pension Plan

If you're married or in a certified same-sex domestic partnership/civil union, your spouse or domestic partner/civil union must choose how to receive your account balance:

  • As a lump-sum distribution
  • As a Single Life Annuity

If the benefit amount is less than $1,000, the benefit is automatically paid as a lump-sum cash distribution.

If you aren't married or in a certified same-sex domestic partnership/civil union, your named beneficiary or estate automatically receives a lump-sum distribution.
