The Dependent Day Care Reimbursement Account
The Dependent Day Care Reimbursement Account allows you to reimburse yourself with before-tax dollars for eligible dependent day care expenses that allow you and your spouse to work. You can use the account to pay for expenses related to the care of a:
- Dependent child under age 13; or
- Disabled spouse, parent, or other family member who depends on you for support.
You must be able to give the taxpayer identification number or Social Security number of the caregiver. Be sure to estimate your expenses carefully, because the IRS insists you forfeit any amount that you don't use by the end of the year.
You must incur expenses during the plan year for which you contribute, and you have until June 30 of the following year to submit claims for reimbursement. Any balance remaining after June 30 will be forfeited.
Quick Reference
- Contribution*: Between $50 and $5,000 a year; up to $2,500 if you are married and file separate tax returns.
- Eligible Expenses: For care at a child care center, in-home care, nanny services, etc., that enables you to work; for a child under age 13 or older dependent (child, spouse, or parent) claimed on your tax return who spends at least eight hours a day in your home.
- Ineligible Expenses: For care while you’re not working; any expenses if your spouse is not employed (or a full-time student or disabled); any care if you cannot report your care provider’s Social Security number or taxpayer identification number.
See the complete list of Child and Dependent Care Expenses the IRS recommends. PSEG follows this list as a guide, but does not offer reimbursement for all expenses.
