NextSteps® Smoking Cessation Program

The StayWell NextSteps® programs are available to all PSEG employees and their spouses. To be eligible for the StayWell NextSteps® programs participants must complete the StayWell Health Risk Assessment.

StayWell’s NextSteps® Smoking Cessation program assists individuals through the entire process of quitting tobacco use. Our triage process matches each participant who is considering quitting or reducing smoking with a qualified Health Coach for personal counseling by telephone or, if more appropriate to the participant’s needs, a mail-based or online program. Like participants in all of our programs, smoking cessation participants learn skills they can apply to changing other unhealthy behaviors including weight management, nutrition and physical activity.

NextSteps® Smoking Cessation telephonic coaching is aimed at smokers who are getting ready to quit smoking but need the level of support this intensive nine-month intervention process provides. Participants engage in five one-on-one telephone sessions, plus individually indicated ad-hoc calls, with a qualified Health Coach. Calls are scheduled at the participant’s convenience and timed to meet their needs in setting personal goals, developing change skills, quitting, and maintaining their non-smoking status after the formal program ends. To support the telephonic coaching process, each participant receives a mailing of stage-based health education materials at the start of the program, and additional print and electronic materials and information as needed during the program. The telephonic coaching process includes the following core elements:

  • Individualized Change Plan: In the initial intake call, the Health Coach guides a discussion that includes assessing the participant’s tobacco use, stage of change, reasons for quitting, previous smoking history and quit attempts, family and social support, and barriers to quitting. The Health Coach also responds to questions and concerns and helps the participant develop an individualized change plan including setting a quit date if appropriate.
  • Quit Date Call: Participants receive a scheduled or ad-hoc call timed around their quit date, to provide critical support during this challenging time.
  • Pharmaceutical Decision Support: The Health Coach assesses the participant’s need for nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) or prescription medication during the intake call. If indicated, beBetter Networks Inc., ships the NRT products directly to the participant’s home. There is no cost to the individual for the 8 week supply of NRT. NRT products include patches, gum or lozenges. In addition, the Health Coach suggests the participant consults with their physician to determine medical appropriateness of NRT or prescription medications.
  • PSEG does cover prescription drug items under the medical/prescription drug benefit plans and is subject to applicable co-payments.
    • CHANTIX
    • NICOTROL INHALER
    • NICOTROL NS (NASAL SPRAY)
    • ZYBAN (BUPROPION HCL)
    • NICOTINE 14MG/24HR PATCH
    • NICOTINE 21MG/24HR PATCH
    • NICOTINE 7MG/24HR PATCH
  • Support Calls: The 5-call protocol supports the participant in developing all the skills they’ll need to quit using tobacco and to become a permanent non-smoker. Early calls focus on assessment, preparing to quit and behavior-change skill building. Later calls typically focus on overcoming barriers to change, dealing with lapses, and enhancing maintenance skills, as well as establish the long-term structure so important in maintaining change.
  • HelpLine Support: Participants can call the toll-free StayWell HelpLine any time during or after the program to get additional support between scheduled calls. Depending on the participant’s needs, HelpLine staff will respond immediately or schedule an ad-hoc call by the Health Coach.
  • Participant Satisfaction: Participants receive a program evaluation questionnaire requesting satisfaction and other ratings of key program components.
